Trichology is the science of the structure, function and diseases of the human hair and scalp. Trichologists diagnose disorders of the hair and scalp including thinning hair, hair loss, scalp disorders and hair texture problems. Trichologists may treat or refer them to other health professionals depending on diagnosis, with follow up appointments where necessary.

The Institute of Trichologists, founded in 1902, is the foremost professional association for Trichologists in the world, the largest provider of trichology training in Europe and the longest established body of its type. Training is comprehensive and covers a wide range of topics including genetics, nutrition, anatomy and physiology, chemistry and microbiology. Members of The Institute of Trichologists have a duty to ensure the Code of Ethics and Professional Practice is adhered to.

In Trichology the training overlaps the medical and cosmetic fields and Trichologists are often asked to deal with conditions not handled by doctors or hairdressers. Consulting takes place in the strictest of confidence and privacy, using differential diagnosis and a holistic approach, as lifestyle, diet and other health problems can all affect your hair and scalp.
